EDUCATION AT WIMPOLE

Lambing talks K2

Lamb and Ewe©C Hayburn/Wimpole

  • The session starts with slides that show the variety of breeds of sheep at Wimpole.
  • Why are sheep kept on farms? Props such as a woolly jumper, a sheep milk yoghurt pot and a leather slipper are shown to help work this out.
  • The correct names for different sorts of sheep are discussed, (ewes, rams and lambs).
  • The group will see slides of a ewe giving birth and feeding her newly born lambs. Visitors during lambing often see ewes giving birth. If children have seen the slides they will know what is happening.
  • Find out what newborn lambs eat and why they are born in spring. It is explained that if a ewe has too many lambs, or cannot look after her lamb the lamb is bottle-fed and kept as a pet lamb.
  • A pet lamb is brought in for everyone to meet and stroke.
  • The children are prompted to remember to wash their hands just as the session ends
