Wimpole Estate Meat
Frequently
Asked Questions
What
is special about Wimpole estate meat?
Wimpole
meat is matured slowly for a fuller flavour. The meat is well marbled, giving
more succulent joints and adding to the rich flavour. At Wimpole, we emphasise
environmental impact of our meat, therefore effort is made to reduce farm inputs
and food miles. Buying meat locally also means you are reducing your Carbon
Footprint. All our meat is fully traceable to individual animals at Home Farm.
Why are we
eating rare breeds? Surely we should just protect them?
By eating rare breed meat you are promoting the breeding programs set up across
the
UK
to save these traditional breeds from extinction. Hopefully if enough people
discover the benefits of rare breed meat more UK farms will diversify into White
Park cattle and Gloucester Old Spot pigs to name but a few.
Is Wimpole
meat organic?
At
Wimpole our meat does not currently hold ‘organic’ status.
The Wimpole estate is currently researching organic conversion.
Nevertheless all our livestock enjoy high welfare standards under Freedom
Food guidelines. Come and visit the farm yourself!
Is Wimpole
meat free-range?
The cattle and sheep at Wimpole enjoy extensive grazing of our parkland. During
certain times of year such a as lambing and wintertime they are brought into the
barns so we can give them the best care. Wimpole pigs are kept in
traditional straw-bedded sties, most with an indoor and outdoor part. At
suitable times of year pigs are kept in outdoor paddocks with straw-bedded
shelters.
