WALLED GARDEN

DIPPING POND

Dipping Pond©WimpoleRestoration of the Walled Garden Dipping Pond has been made possible by a generous donation to Wimpole in memory of John Atiyah.

The excavation has uncovered an original dipping pond which is probably Victorian, although it might have replaced an earlier eighteenth century pond.

Excavation of the flower bed started in early October 2003 with the initial removal of box hedging and the Canna.

Although it was known the Dipping Pond was originally there, the condition of the remaining brickwork and surviving features was a pleasant surprise and its restoration has been made that much easier.

When the Dipping pond was demolished the hole was backfilled with soil, bricks, pots, glass, metalwork and best of all some of the original edging stones, which can be seen edging the excavated pond on the first picture.

Terracotta Pot©WimpoleA number of these tiny terracotta pots were unearthed still in one piece, which will hopefully be used on for displays in the future.
